If you are looking to spruce up your home for less, there are a number of cost-effective tips you can try to give it a new, more luxurious look. Student Krishnan Rajaratnam, 20, who studies Interior Architecture and Design at Coventry University, shared tons of handy tips in a series of TikTok videos which have since gone viral.
Krishnan revealed several décor faux pas which can make your home look ‘cheap’. He also provided some handy ways homeowners can modernise their homes without breaking the bank.
His latest videos, which have racked up millions of views, reveal some of the simple ways clutter, curtains and bedding can cheapen the look of your pad. Krishnan tells homeowners to throw out short curtains and patterned duvet covers as well as hide exposed electrical cables.
Krishnan advised against sticking LED light strips on your ceiling as this can make your home look cheap. He also said that homeowners should steer clear of patterned bedsheets, noting that bright white sheets look more minimalistic and modern.
Another décor issue Krishnan revealed can cheapen your home is leaving cables exposed underneath televisions and electrical equipment as this can make your room look messy. He also advised people to get rid of outdated lighting fixtures and replace them with more luxurious looking light fixtures.
Krishnan said homeowners should also consider replacing curtains which may be too short. Choosing longer curtains that drape to the floor gives the illusion of more height and therefore more space in the room.
Getting rid of over the door coat hangers can make your room look neat and tidy as they can often make the room seem cluttered. Staying clear of mess on exposed shelving units can also help create a tidy, minimalist space adding a little extra value to your home.
Although this may sound obvious, Krishnan also said that homeowners should make sure their bedsheets are not creased as this can make all the difference. Ironing out wrinkles and making the bed neatly can give your bedroom a more luxurious feel.
Most people have some form of artwork in their homes, however, Krishnan says this can look a bit tacky if people buy mass-produced prints. He also advised against wall stickers as they can cheapen the feel of the room.
Speaking to CoventryLive about why he decided to make the TikTok videos, Krishnan said: “I have always enjoyed interior home decorating from a young age and I also study Interior Architecture and Design at Coventry University so I wanted to share the tips that I have learned over the years to help others improve their homes.”
Krishnan said he was ‘shocked’ when he realised his videos had been viewed by millions of people. He said: “When I went viral I was shocked and surprised as I did not expect a few interior design tips to get millions of views.
“Most of the tips I share are about furniture placement. I also share tips that can be easily fixed as interior decorating can be very expensive.”
